General

Q:  What are Hurricane Sandy Relief enhanced rebates?

These were temporary financial incentives to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy.  In some cases, the program included an additional incentive amount to a pre-existing program incentive and in other cases there were incentives made available where none exist. A Sand incentive was provided to residential HVAC systems purchased on or before 8/1/16. As of 8/1/16 the enhanced Sandy rebate for HVAC equipment was discontinued.

Q:  Who were eligible for the enhanced rebates?

Customers who were:
1. Replacing equipment/appliances in a home or business damaged by Hurricane Sandy AND
2. Were located in an NJ Office of Emergency Management designated area affected by Hurricane Sandy via zip code list or those that demonstrated the damage was caused by the storm.

Q:  Was there a special application for the enhanced rebates?

Each program had a specific rebate application form. In addition, the Hurricane Sandy Homeowner Certification Form must also be completed, attached and mailed in along with the rebate application.

Q:  How long does it take to receive the rebate?

Please allow up to 120 days from the time we receive all the required information to process your rebate. If you are applying for multiple rebates, you will receive more than one check in the mail.  For example, if you applied for a water heater rebate and a furnace rebate, the checks will be sent to you separately.

Q:  How long do I have to submit the enhanced rebate application/paperwork?

The enhanced rebates for residential HVAC systems were available for purchases made on or before 8/1/16. Please refer to the individual rebate application forms for information regarding submission deadlines.

Q:  Who can I call if I have questions?

Call 866-NJSMART to speak with someone directly.

Homeowner FAQs

Q:  Were there rebates on dishwashers or dryers?

Q:  Who was eligible for the additional $200 enhanced rebate?

For those with equipment damaged by Hurricane Sandy, an additional $200 per unit was added for qualifying Furnaces, Boilers, Heat Pumps, Gas Water Heaters, Central Air Conditioners and Mini-split Units.

Q:  How will the added $200 rebate be paid?

You will receive a separate rebate check for $200 in addition to your pre-existing rebate.

Q:  I still have questions, who can I call?

Call 866-NJSMART to speak with a representative.

Business and Local Government FAQs

Q:  Are the enhanced rebates only available for the NJ SmartStart Buildings Program?

Yes, NJ SmartStart Buildings is the only eligible program for businesses and local governments. There are no enhanced rebates offered through other programs such as Pay for Performance or Direct Install.

Q:  What other documents outside of the typical application process must I include with my application to receive the enhanced incentives?

If your zip code is on the list, you will need to complete a Business Certification Form (e-form or regular version) and submit it along with the NJ SmartStart Buildings equipment application(s). This form certifies that your  building's equipment had damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. If your zip code is not on the list, but you have incurred loss and/or damage from Hurricane Sandy, please contact us at 866-NJSMART extension 4 prior to submitting an application for more information.

Q:  I see Food Service equipment incentives are now available. If I was not affected by Hurricane Sandy, can I apply for the new incentives?

The incentives for high efficiency commercial Food Service equipment are available statewide.  As with all NJ SmartStart Buildings measures, pre-approval is required.

Q:  Are there any specific incentive caps that I should be aware of?

The NJ SmartStart Buildings Program has a 100% of material costs incentive cap, meaning that the incentive to be paid will not exceed the cost of materials for the equipment. Submitted invoices must clearly state material and labor costs for this assessment to be made. Material costs should be net of any FEMA or insurance company payments.

Q:  Do I need to purchase new equipment or services from a specific dealer or contractor?

New equipment may be purchased from any vendor of your choosing, however the equipment must meet the program requirements as detailed on the application forms

Q:  Where should I mail my application?

If you were affected by Hurricane Sandy, the application, certification form and other documentation may be mailed to:  Hurricane Sandy, c/o TRC Energy Services, 900 Route 9 North, Suite 404, Woodbridge, NJ  07095.

Q:  I still have questions, who can I call?
