Ed J. Residence - Residential New Construction

A single-family home of 4,322 square feet was designated as a Zero Energy Ready Home through the Residential New Construction Program. Ed J. and his wife first broke ground on the foundation of their home located in Flemington in November 2015.  Since then Ed has documented the entire experience in a blog he developed specifically dedicated to their Zero Energy Ready Home.  The equipment installed for Ed's home included the following:

  • an electric heat pump for water heating
  • an air-source heat pump for heating and cooling
  • a programmable thermostat
  • heat recovery ventilation
  • high efficiency triple pane windows
  • insulation in the walls and ceilings
  • ENERGY STAR certified lighting, refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer, dryer, electric oven and ceiling fan
  • Solar System

After the home's solar system had been up and running for a year, Ed and his wife achieved their net-zero energy goals as their usage was 6,673 and generation was 6,722 kWh.  They experienced a 90% reduction in energy costs compared to their last house with the same square footage.  The project received a $15,750 rebate from New Jersey's Clean Energy Program.

"The house lives up to all my expectations. In winter there are no cold spots or drafts." - Ed J.
